Did you know that taking vocal lessons can have extremely positive psychological effects. The act of singing releases endorphins, the brain's "feel good" chemicals.  Singing is prescribed by many doctors to relieve anxiety and depression!   

If you have ever sung a song, a natural body/mind reaction is one of elation.  This comes from a hormone released by singing called endorphins.  Endorphins are associated with feelings of pleasure.  Another hormone released during singing,  is oxytocin.  This hormone has also been found to alleviate anxiety and stress.  Oxytocin also promotes feelings of trust and bonding.  More studies have found that singing lessens feelings of depression and anxiety!

Anyone at any age can take vocal lessons.  However it is very important to note that a young child's vocal cords are not fully developed until after puberty, therefore choosing a teacher who really understands the different stages of vocal development is of the utmost importance.  A young voice should be singing in a certain range according to the student's particular stage of development, and should not be overused.  

 Starting children in music as early as possible is integral for a lifetime of learning and loving music.  But sometimes starting them out on an instrument (the voice is considered an instrument) is not always the best first step.   An alternative music lesson program that we would like to suggest for children between the ages of 3 - 8 years is our Mini Musicians program.  This program is filled with loads of singing!  The teacher, an early childhood music education specialist, also understands the correct vocal range for these age groups, and the vocal pieces that children sing in the program are designed to teach the child pitch, solfege, note reading, note duration, and many other aspects of the music language.  In fact, at this stage (between the ages of 3 - 8) our Mini Musicians program prepares your young child for future music lessons and involvement in a lifetime of music much better than private lessons.
